Many bloggers are throwing around the term "guest blogging" these days. Find out just what guest blogging is and how it can benefit your blog.

Bloggers are often looking for ways to increase traffic to their sites. There are several ways to go about doing this. Optimizing for the search engines, buying advertising, submitting posts to search engines, and article syndication are all ways that bloggers can gain traffic.

Increasingly, bloggers are turning to guest blogging as a form of garnering traffic. Guest blogging is when a blog post is written by an author who does not usually write for the site. Such arrangements are generally free of charge for both parties.

Why would someone want to write for free? Why would a blogger want someone else to write for their blog? The answer lies in one simple word: traffic.

The host blogger can gain traffic from the guest author’s blog. The reason is that the guest author usually informs his or her audience that they have guest posted on another site. Naturally, their fans will want to read this post and find out more about a blog that would host authors they admire.

Additionally, the guest blogger can gain traffic from the host’s audience. A guest post is almost as good, if not better, than a recommendation. The host blogger’s audience will also demonstrate a natural curiosity into the writer in which their favorite blogger has put their trust.

Another reason guest blogging is popular is getting links to your blog. Because both bloggers tend to link to each other when a guest post is published, this can help both sites when it comes to search engine rankings. Search engines like to give value to sites that have many links. They see these sites as authoritative and rank them higher in the search results.

Bloggers should choose their guest bloggers and guest blogging opportunities carefully. They should get to know other authors in their niche or community by networking, leaving comments on other blogs, and building relationships. It’s important to engage in guest blogging exchanges where there is an element of built-in trust. Think of it in terms of a morning news program. Networks won’t let just anyone fill in for an anchor who has the day off. Bloggers shouldn’t let just anyone guest blog on their site.

Additionally, if a blogger builds relationships with other bloggers by commenting on their sites, then they have an added advantage of name recognition among readers who regularly peruse the comments section of that blog. This offers a credibility for both the host and guest blogger and makes the “transition” feeling of a guest blog run more seamlessly.

Overall, the benefits of guest blogging are many and not to be ignored. The advantages of exposure to a new audience and linking can have a substantial effect on a site for years to come.

Looking for ways to increase the number of visitors to your Travel Blog? Consider Guest Blogging. I've shared my Top Tips for using guest blogging to your advantage and to increase your audience.

Like many other types of social networking, Guest Blogging exposes you (in a good way, not that “scare-the-kids-and-get-carted-off-to-jail-in-handcuffs” kind of way) to the readers of the travel blog hosting your article, thereby helping to grow your audience.

In the process, by promoting (on your travel blog) your Guest Blog Post that’s been published on the other travel blog, you’re letting your readers know about that site and helping them to grow their audience as well. It’s a ‘win/win’ for both of you.

A good quality Travel Blog should – at the very least – give guest bloggers a link back to the guest blogger’s travel blog as part of the article’s meta data (author info at the end of the post), and often they will allow additional guest blogger info such as a photo, a biography, and social media links so that you can get new Twitter followers and/or Facebook friends and fans.

Tips for being a Good Guest Blogger: If you’ve been invited (or are offering) to submit a guest blog post, be sure to do the following:

Do your homework – read some of the posts of the travel blog you’d like to write for to get a feel for what types and styles of articles they normally publish. If they have guidelines for submitting articles, read them;

Ask if the blog owner has a specific topic in mind for your Guest Blog Post, and offer a couple of topic suggestions in case they don’t or are just open to ideas;

Ask how many words they would like, and if they’d like you to provide images as well (be sure that the images are your own or are royalty-free);

Understand that your blog host may do some light editing (usually only styles such as bolding and italicizing words and phrases, adding paragraph breaks, etc) but if they do wind up correcting things such as spelling and grammar, be grateful – it keeps you looking good!;

Tips for being a Good Guest Blog Host: If you’ve invited someone to submit a guest blog post to your travel blog, try to keep this advice in mind:

If you have a specific story topic or perspective you’d like, say so. If not, be open to suggestions;

Keep your readers in mind – what would interest them? Realize that sometimes it’s good to break out of your normal realm;

Try to keep your copyediting to a minimum – after all, every travel writer has their own ‘voice’ and you don’t want to stifle that;

DO make corrections if you find spelling or grammar errors – you want your guest bloggers to look good to your audience – but it’s nice to ask beforehand if your guest blogger minds such edits;

Incentivize guest bloggers! Give them the ability to draw readers to their own travel blogs by displaying a link to their site in your post meta section, and if your WordPress Theme has an Author Template (author.php) use it to your guest blogger’s advantage by including their photo, bio, and additional links;

The Travel Blogger community is one of the strongest and most supportive out there, and a Guest Blogger relationship benefits both the guest blogger and the hosting travel blog, so take advantage of any invitation that you receive to submit a guest blog post to other travel blogs or travel related website. In addtion, you should also be actively seeking such opportunities, and offering to write for other travel blogs as well.

I’m sure that if you’re reading this, you’re familiar with the concept of “guest blogging”. I’ve mentioned it before in a previous article, but if you aren’t quite sure what I’m talking about, it’s really simple. The name says it all – guest blogging is simply the act of getting on of your posts published on another blogger’s blog.

Now, even though guest blogging means you would write for any blog, typically when the seasoned blogger thinks of guest blogging, they are talking about getting your article published on a blog that has more readership and/or is more popular than your own.

Why?

Simple, really. If you were to guest post on a blog like Problogger, you would benefit the owner of the blog (in this case, Darren Rowse) by providing content for him that he didn’t have to write, and best of all, most times when you guest blog you’re allowed to link back to your own blog or website in your byline.

For example, the post would start out as: This post was written by Homer Simpson of homersimpson.com

When you get your link on a hot blog like Problogger, chances are, you’ll gain a significant amount of traffic, and a certain amount of that traffic that you receive will probably result in new RSS subscribers, which of course is always swell.

Guest blogging has actually played a key role in the success of many bloggers around the blogosphere. In some cases, they may have had good blogs before the guest post, but getting the extreme exposure on a popular blog can often be enough to launch you to the next level of blogging. I can’t think of examples off the top of my head, but trust me, there are plenty of those that saw immediate success after just one good guest post on an A-list blog.

Generally speaking, you can submit a guest post to any blogger at any given time. They’re used to it, and they receive submissions on a daily basis. However, here are a few things you absolutely keep in mind when you decide to submit a guest article to an A-list blog:

Make sure the article is your absolute, A-game best work.

Write on a subject that you know, and also make sure it relates to the blog your submitting to.

Check and double check for grammar and spelling errors. Make sure it looks GREAT.

Politely ask the blogger to consider your post for an upcoming guest post slot. Don’t make the email a long, drawn out one that takes too much time to read. These are busy people, so make it short, professional, and sweet.

Having said that, there are times when big name bloggers put out a call for guest posts. Recently, John Chow announced his trip to China, and that he was open to guest post submissions. I’m sure a lot of bloggers took advantage of this (they’d be silly not to), and I’m sure he has a pile of submissions to look at. I know he’ll only take quality work, so I wrote up a 1200 word detailed post on a related subject, and submitted it to him for consideration. I never received confirmation that he would use it, but the last thing I want to do is bother him about it. If it goes live, it goes live. If not, yeah, I may weep quietly to myself, but it’s not the end of the world. My point is, when a popular blogger actually makes a post asking for guest blog submissions, jump on it!

I know many of you are already familiar with guest blogging, but it never hurts to tell those that don’t. This isn’t an A-list blog, but if you’re interested in guest blogging here, I would happily accept your submission. If you’re interested in taking me up on the deal, just use my contact form to get in touch with me, and I’ll get back to you as soon as possible
