Conn Versus Cow Mega Smackdown

Posted by Larry in May 14th 2008

Finally, some decent action around the blogosphere.

Truly a competition that I can get interested in!

I’m talking about Garry Conn vs. John Cow - the ultimate showdown of blogging skills, talent, and most definitely luck. After a considerable amount of smack talk for the last month or so, the two well known bloggers (well, this isn’t the original John Cow, but nevertheless) will go face to face, pulling out all the stops to see who can build the most profitable blog in merely 30 days time. The winner will be decided by who’s blog sells for more on Sitepoint.Com (a well known venue for selling websites and blogs).

The main reason I’m highly interested in this, besides the players, is because of the type of contest it is. For many of you who don’t know, I have a bit of experience selling and flipping blogs on Sitepoint. Actually, it was the bread and butter in my own little internet marketing corner of the world. I sold a couple of wonderful blogs on Sitepoint a while back, along with several other smaller ones, and it never gets old. I love building blogs with quality content, drawing traffic to them, getting them ranked in the search engines, and then selling them. The difference between me and many others is the fact that I truly care about the blogs that I sell, and I always hope that they go into the best hands possible, and so far I’ve been very happy with the outcomes.

Ah, but I digress…

I’ve known Garry Conn since the days when he had under 100 RSS subscribers, and he was just another small fish in a big pond trying to make it. Well, he did, and big congrats to him on that. I haven’t talked to him for a while now, but I know what he’s capable of, and John Cow definitely better have some slick tricks up his sleeve to take on King Conn.

I was actively blogging when JohnCow.Com was born, and I’ll never forget how much of a frenzy he created when that blog started. It was truly the first good spoof of an A-list blogger, and due to the extreme buzz he created, he became an overnight success, especially when the real John Chow started talking about him. Since then, new owners have taken over JohnCow.Com, and I have absolutely no idea who they are, so I can’t vouch for how cunning and slick they may or may not be. Only time will tell. Some folks, including Garry, think that JohnCow.Com never sold to anyone, and that in fact all the times it was listed on Sitepoint was just a publicity stunt. Others believe that Garry is the new owner of JohnCow. Who knows? Personally, I don’t care, and whoever it is, good luck to them!

Here are the official contest rules:

Rules of the John Cow vs Garry Conn Cowpetition…

  • Starts Monday May 19th
  • Sites will be listed on SitePoint on Wednesday June 18th
  • Winner of contest will be decided by which site generates the highest sale
  • Blogs must be on a brand new domain
  • Blogs must be 100% original work
  • Blogs must not be a premade or bought and put on a new domain
  • Blogs will be listed on SitePoint with full disclosure of who bought them and for how much
  • Listing will be 100% handled by Sitepoint (for fair third party listing)

More details about this competition can be found in the following announcement posts:

There is also a contest running in parallel with this competition. You stand a chance at winning thousands of dollars worth of prizes (although I must say, there isn’t much but a bunch of ebooks, a script, and a membership or two). I would have liked to see some tangible, sweet prizes like gadgets, electronics, cash, or something other than overpriced programming. That’s why they won’t collect my email address (which is required for entry into the contest), but best of luck to those that enter!

On the other hand, if you’re interested in learning how Garry builds his new blog step by step, and the various strategies he uses, you may want to sign up for his case study via email. It wouldn’t hurt, and you’d probably learn a few things in the process. But I hope Garry doesn’t give away too much info, as I’m sure all the JohnCow supporters will be signing up on the down low for a little covert recon. It should be a blast though, and I can’t wait to see how this pans out.

Just like in politics, I’m going to throw out my endorsement for one of these two bloggers. The way I see it, the people behind John Cow know how to create buzz, and probably have some wicked tricks ready to deploy, and I wish them luck, however, as I mentioned above, Garry Conn is no stranger to blogging, buzz, and everything else in between - not to mention I consider him an old friend.

So go get ‘em Garry, I think you have the stones, savvy, and sense to take down the fat Cow once and for all!

Be sure to check back here for updates, as I will follow the contest the best I can, and best of luck to both of you.

Ding ding ding!!
