“Link Juice” and PageRank
Linking is the lifeblood of blogging and, come to think of it, much else on the web.
Blogging is based on a dialogue, not a monologue. The community relies on hyperlinks to keep us all inter-connected and the conversations valuable and active.
One-way conversations are boring. In life and on the ‘net!
Those in the blog world who play by the rules and interact with others do and will benefit. Those who don’t, well: it’s unhelpful, to say the least.
By linking to another website you will, generally, help it (though there are increasingly complex elements within the Search Engines’ algorithms which mean that receiving a link from a ‘bad’ or off-topic page may be damaging to the recipient page’s Page Rank – more another time, though see other pages on ClubBlogger on the topic).
Linking to fellow bloggers actually helps you, because they will find that backlink (otherwise known as ego-searching) and probably visit your blog out of curiosity. Who knows — they might even bookmark you, or even better link back to you and become a regular reader. Always nice.
Fact: the blogosphere environment is absolutely no different than the community – in ‘real’ life or online. What you put in, you get out. Or at least, should.
On the topic of PageRank, according to Google:
“PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page’s value. In essence,Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves “important” weigh more heavily and help to make other pages “important.”

It’s interesting you wrote this post because on another blog the author recently asked the question of which a person might prefer, page rank or more visitors, and of course it came down on more visitors. Yet, as you’ve stated, one of those ways to get those folks is to obtain more links in some fashion, hoping folks will follow those links back to you. Nice job.

Mitch – thanks, yes, it all depends on perception, here. As I know you know, the number of visitors, links and PageRank are all closely linked. Particularly in, for example, the algorithms of Google in terms of how it ranks pages and, accordingly, effectively how many visitors a site/blog gets. All the best,
To be honest, I always blurred and confused about the Google's Page Rank, as it takes many algorithms and analysis to understand it! However, there's one thing I'm 100% positive about it: A blog without readers is useless and worthless…

Visitors are No.1 – no doubt – certainly not in my mind. We’ve looked at this before in various posts, which you may have seen: http://clubblogger.com/the-right-way-to-get-people-clamoring-to-read-your-blog/
The issue is that the number of visitors helps Page Rank, and the Page Rank helps the number of visitors
Bottom line: if the blog has good content, is well written and adds value for its readers, it will self-promote. Sometime, for various technical reasons, it needs a little help. We’ve also covered that, too, in our archives and will be returning to the topic.
All the best guys, ClubBlogger
I can't but agree with this statement. Visitors and Pagerank are like the chicken and the egg. But no need to find out which one was first. If you have an egg, nurture it, cherish it, and it will bring you a chicken, which will then over time bring you more eggs, and chickens, and roosters. Wait, no, let's not go down that road now
